Bee

28 05 2008

A man was driving down the road and  ran out of gas. Just  at that moment, a bee flew in his  window.

to be the problem?”

away. Minutes later, the man  watched as an entire  swarm of bees flew to his car  and into his gas tank.  After a few minutes, the bees  flew out.
“Try it now,” said one  bee.

right up. “Wow!” the man  exclaimed, “what did you
 put in my gas tank”?

A park right in the middle of the city – it was refreshing to get away from the traffic and fumes – a bit like walking into another world where ppl are relaxed, exercising, fishing, etc……

Shanghai – Qibao (7 treasures) Ancient Town

12 05 2008

Qibao Ancient Town

Approximately 18 kilometers from downtown Shanghai is the only ancient Chinese town in Shanghai, the Qibao Ancient Town. This old town is 2 square kilometers in size and is crossed by two strips of water. Surrounding the water is a variety of well preserved ancient Chinese houses, shops, and restaurants. Qibao means “Seven Treasures” in Chinese and the town got its name from a legend that referred to seven treasures in this area. Qibao Ancient Town, with a history of more than 1000 years, is one of the most important historical sites in Shanghai.

This old town started development in the Song dynasty of China and was at its best in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The stone roads and long narrow lanes that are worn over time at Qibao Ancient Town date all the way back to the Song Dynasty while the traditional Chinese architectural specialties, such as pavilions, terraces, and towers came from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

At the heart of Qibao Ancient Town is an old street that is said to best resemble the streets of old Shanghai. This old street is divided into two smaller segments. The western segment consists of ancient shops that sell traditional handicrafts and calligraphy and has ancient Chinese Shadow Play theaters. In the southern segment you will find a variety of traditional restaurants that serve various authentic Chinese snacks and dishes.

 How to get there -

Subway - Use subway line 9 to reach Qibao station (七宝镇). Walk eastwards 250m to the entrance of Qibao town.  Line 9 has been nicknamed the “Ancient Speedway” because it passes through several historically significant satellite towns of Shanghai: Qibao, Jiuting and Songjiang.

Because stubborn neighbors have delayed Line 9’s connection to Lines 3/4, a bus connection between Guilin Rd and Yishan Rd will substitute for a direct metro connection until the Yishan Rd interchange opens at the end of 2008. The two stations are 1 km apart as the crow flies, but the bus will have to cover 3 km on surface streets for a travel time of 10-20 minutes. The maximum departure frequency will be 3 minutes per bus.

Direct bus - services of No.91, 92, 513, 803, Shenhua Line, Nanjia Line, Shenbei Line

It is VERY much a tourist area, but worth seeing I guess.  I found only one shop selling clothes at cheap prices – on the left, almost at the end of this row of shops.  The lady proprietor is very fussy about you touching her clothes, and she does not like you to try them……… I guess she knows that people will buy her stuff, cos the price is reasonable – no haggling here.  I told her that I wanted to try the clothes and she only agreed after she noticed we were buying quite a lot of dresses.

Wooden bath tubs for sale at RMB1200 – about RM600

Mei Fang is my sister-in-law’s friend. She was a wonderful hostess – rented a car with a driver and picked us up at the hotel to bring us here.  We went home by ourselves as she had something urgent to do later.

Shanghai city at night

We saw some people just chatting and shaking legs on this 90 year old building ……….. on the window ledge of the ………. 2ND FLOOR ?!!!!!

Temperature was about 16 C

Shanghai Old Road – Faces

11 05 2008

China is really rapidly developing and you see lots of new and modern buildings……….. but I guess habits die hard………. changing people and their way of doing things are really the most difficult.  It takes a year to make a  man a millionaire, but a hundred years to make a noble man out of him.

This was what greeted us as we walked into Shanghai Old street!

I wonder if the words on the wall says “No urinating here” ?

In the short 5 days we were there, we encountered at least 3 men urinating in public.  This guy might not have been able to find a toilet quickly enough, but in the other 2 cases, they were evidently workers of a restaurant, just taking a short break at the back of their hotel and could easily have gone back into the proper toilet, but they chose the easy way out……….just do it in the back lane!!

Despite the fast pace of life in Shanghai, it was refreshing to see people still having time for a lesisurely game of chess

The colours, sounds and smells were just so fascinating here

If you get a chance to visit this place, don’t miss the barbequed squid – delicious :)

Barbequed meat on a stick – can’t beat our Malaysian Satay though

Shanghai Old Street – buildings

11 05 2008

Shanghai old street known as “FangBang Road” is where you will find some of the original oldest buildings in Shanghai.  The little back and side lanes of this place is alive and fascinating as my next post will show you.

Old buildings above………..

                           and new buildings below …………..

sit alongside the streets here – the area is divided into the western and eastern areas.

Clothes being put out to dry on poles like these are common in Malaysia………..

but on public electrical and telephone lines??? ………. that’s just amazing to me.  I mean, imagine going out at 8 in the morning with some clothes and a long pole and hanging your clothes on the public cables on the road???!!!

Despite the “old-ness” of the buildings, it’s locks are definitely high tech stuff

This is definitely not part of the old city, the buildings here are new (re-constructed or just copies of the original) and this is a more commercially “touristy” area.
