Mamma Mia

17 12 2008

 images1

We won 2 Mamma Mia tickets from HSBC:)

BUT….

we are being very good sacrificial parents

(actually, I saw the musical in Vegas, so its only Allan who’s being sacrificial)

and

am offering it to our children

(tried to buy another ticket for all 3, but they are sold out for the nite we are going)

so

Andrea generously offered to give it up for the other 2 to go

so Andy and Angie will get to go

and we love Andrea for her generosity :)

I still know who she is…….

16 12 2008

Someone sent me this story and I want to share it with you………

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him.
I saw him looking at his watch and decided since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.
On examining it I saw it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors and got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.

The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.
I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while! As she is a victim of Alzheimer’s disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.

He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised and asked him, ‘And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’
He smiled as he patted my hand and said, ‘She doesn’t know me but I still know who she is.’

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm and thought, ‘That is the kind of love I want in my life.

True love is neither physical nor romantic’.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

Happy Birthday Andrea!

15 12 2008

I know, I know, I’m 6 days late, but I’m sure Andrea wouldn’t mind because she had one of the best birthdays ever!

December 9th was the last day of camp and we all wished her a Happy Birthday at midnight on Dec 8th, gave her our present and …… nothing. Yup, absolutely nothing the next day.

I think she might have been just a little bit miffed although she didn’t say so. I know I would have been, or at the least, pretty confused!

Anyway, we arrived home after lunch and took her into the house – then ……. SURPRISE!!!

Angie had arranged for the youth to be at the house before we arrived home, and I asked Keng Lik to buy a cake for her, and to park their cars farther away from the house.

They all hid in the kitchen and when they came out singing her the birthday song, the look on her face was priceless, except Andy was behind her and didn’t manage to catch the expression on camera.

Of course, the mandatory “pushing-of-face-into-the-cake”, only this time, they were very careful not to be too rough cos everybody wanted to eat the cake too

4andreabd10

Family pic – we can probably “cut and paste” Anna’s pic here?

4andreabd11

Although this pic is blur, it deserves its place here – because Angie was the one behind it all – the thoughtful sister who planned this surprise :)

After this, those who came went for a basketball game and later we just asked all who were there to join us for dinner at Pizza Hut.  There was one person who took the trouble to buy Andrea a present but was unfortunately left out because of some communication mix up……..so, Ooi Tong, thanks for remembering Andrea’s birthday and so sorry that you didn’t get to join us for the makan – will make it up to you, ok? For the rest who didn’t join us, well, don’t think we left you out on purpose – we had just planned on having a quiet birthday dinner since we just came back from camp, but at the last minute, we changed our minds and invited all who were there and those who were near enough to go along and it was too late to start calling and picking up the other youth.

4andreabd1

4andreabd3

4andreabd21

4andreabd4

Hmm, what else? Oh yes, we were at Pizza Hut in Ampang and I must say the service needs to be improved. The orders were all mixed up with the wrong dish given to the wrong table and they implied that it was our fault for having all 4 tables’ bills incorporated into one……..I was like, “Hello, can’t you ask who ordered what?” What a lousy excuse for bad service!!!! I mean, before we complained, they were just dumping all the dishes on one table and I had to send it to the right table! The mamak stall does better, the waiters remember who ordered what and if they don’t they will ask.

Pizza Hut, recession is setting in and if you want to keep customers coming in, better re-train all your waiters and waitresses!

Jalan Allan’s U turn

13 12 2008

Last month the neighbourhood folks all gathered at the Good Shepherd Kindergarten near our homes to meet with the minister to voice out our concerns about the new access road next to the DUKE highway exit.  We felt it was too narrow.  So we all went, together with our Allan and Friends’ staff.  When the minister arrived, Allan made sure he was right in front and with his loud voice, asked for 2 things – that the road in our neighbourhood be properly re-paved when all the works are completed.  Next, he asked for a U turn at our Taman Hillview Roundabout. (Honestly, I didn’t know where to put my face then because I thought he would be asking for a wider road – I mean THAT WAS why we were gathered there!!) If you know Allan, he can be very persistent and the minister finally decided it was better to listen to this loud man and get rid of him or else he wouldn’t be able to concentrate on the other issues! ha! ha! ha! ha!

Anyway, he gave Allan his word and our local MP who was also there, was the “kind -of witness”.  Happy with the results, Allan went off with a smile like a little boy who’s been given an ice cream, durian ice cream, no less!

5allanduke

A few days back, as we passed the roundabout, Allan glanced at the area and gave a self satisfied smirk.  I noticed it and asked him what he was smiling about and he said, “Ah, they are making the U turn, I feel good about it”

Me – “Huh?”

He – “Yeah, I asked for it, at least I know I have left a legacy behind”

Me- *doink*

5uturn1

OK, granted, Allan did ask for the U turn and I’m glad that the minister kept his promise. Nevertheless, I shall now name this “Jalan Allan’s U turn”.

In closing, as a responsible blogger, I want to give credit to the Works Minister for listening to us and keeping his promise.

Ta….

Allan’s pyterygium operation

10 12 2008

Allan had an operation today to remove a Pyterygium. What is it??

A pterygium is a wing-shaped pinkish growth made up of thickened conjunctiva tissue located on either side of the cornea. These growths, which can be seen with the naked eye, are usually found on the side of the eye nearest the nose. The growth has a triangular-shaped body with a rounded apical “head” that moves toward the cornea. Symptoms are variable. There may be some discomfort such as a pricking or gritty sensation. There may also be recurrent redness. When the growth gets to the cornea, it can affect a person’s vision. The growth must be removed if it affects vision. This is done in a hospital under general or local anaesthetic. It can’t be removed with laser surgery. Post-operatively,drops or an ointment will be prescribed. The eye must be protected from wind and bright sunlight. A pterygium is likely to recur after it is removed. Eye drops or radio therapy may be used to prevent recurrence.

This is what it looks like

And this is what Allan looks like now

allan

He had the growth removed and a graft done.  In other words, it was a “cut and paste” job.  And where did they get the stuff to paste over the cut area? Well, from another part of the eye @.@

Do pray for him please, to have a quick recovery and that the pyterygium will not grow back.  There is a tendency for that to happen, and it has already happened with his other eye.

Eat, eat, eat in Langkawi

4 12 2008

Right, just what do you do in Langkawi? Well, we did the touristy stuff (sightseeing), the visiting stuff (looked at the different hotels, drove around almost the whole island), the activities stuff (swimming, walking around, cable car-ing), the shopping stuff (chocolates, etc) and now I’m going to talk about the eating stuff.

3foodtelagacafe

The first night, we decided to visit Pantai Cenang, the “happening” place for some food – how did we decide on the place?  Well, we were really hungry, so we looked at the number of tables (of hungry customers) still waiting for their food, and left a few places because of that.  Finally decided on Arabic food which was not really Arabic food – I mean, it didn’t have really authentic Arabic food like the kind you get at TarBush for example – I went, “What? No Chick Peas?”

Ah well, we were just too tired and hungry to go somewhere else, so we stayed and ate.  This is a family run business.

Incidentally, the beer IS cheaper than Coke or any other carbonated drink :( However, this place does not serve beer. Obviously la

Telaga Arabic restaurant

3foodshinmi1

We needed something else, so we stopped by at Shin Mi Seafood Village on the way back to Berjaya Resort.

3foodshinmi2

Food here is ok, service fast, people friendly, price ok.

The next day we went to the Marina to have some lunch, ended up at our own Dr M’s Bakery, heard the food is good, but actually we were really desperate to get online and retrieve our mail, so we ordered something and sat there for a while to do our mailing. One warning, when you ask for water, they mean mineral water, and that’s from Italy and you pay Italian too!

Allow me to sidetrack a bit to post some pics of the beautiful yacht’s there, including our own Jalur Gemilang.

3marina1

There are many food outlets here, but we wanted something simple, plain and cheap.  There is mamak restaurant just behind this row of shops and Allan was very happy with his Nasi there.

3marina2

3marina5

NICE!!!

3marina3

3marina4

The Jalur Gemilang is really quite small, which really made me respect the man (Datuk Azhar Mansur) so much more. Couldn’t have been easy sailing this baby alone.

OK

Back to food….

We went to Kuah Town on our 2nd night and did a LOT of shopping, THEN looked for food – as usual, very hungry, so just went into the first coffee shop we saw – nothing spectacular – they tried to get us to order their most expensive dishes.

3lighthouse

3lighthouse2

The lighthouse is a great, cosy place for a meal. Its just farther up Pantai Cenang, tucked away in a corner.

3sandybeachfood

The 2nd last place we went to eat at was at Sandy Beach (talked about this place in my previous post).

This was just before we had to go to the airport.

3cendul

On the way to the airport from Pantai Cenang, Allan just HAD to stop at this cendul stall. In fact, we passed it and he made a U-turn……yeah, THAT desperate. Why? He saw quite a lot of people there and figured that the cendul must be good……

IT WASN”T

3cendul2

I don’t know why everybody else went to eat there – this must be one of the worst cenduls I’ve ever eaten, plus……there were huge lumps of cow dung just around the area!!!
