On top of Notre Dame and a cuppa in Paris

15 09 2009

This is the place to queue for the walk up the Notre Dame

The Gargoyles and Chimeras were so fascinating and we wondered at the patience of the workers, taking the trouble to create different looking ones to adorn the walls of the Notre Dame!

P1050160_2

The first flight of steps lead to the Notre Dame shop

P1050166

We noticed how well worn the steps were and imagined the person going up and down the steps to the bell room to ring it many times a day, finally creating marks on the steps many years later

P1050171

P1050173

The first viewing balcony after the shop – everyone just gasped and cameras clicked away

P1050175

Wired cages to prevent anyone falling – accidentally or otherwise :p

P1050178

The was also where the chimeras could be viewed up close and my imagination ran wild as I tried to recall how Quasimodo felt when he walked passed them

P1050179

How would you like one of these in your garden?

P1050185

The “white roof chapel” – the next place we were going to.

P1050190

P1050202

The Great Bell, weighing 13 tons. Wonder how they got this fella up here.

P1050205

The bell room was constructed of wood, to absord the sound, otherwise the vibration would have been too much for concrete

French people are so tall – why did they build such a low door for this bell room? Any engineers out there want to answer this one? It would have been the perfect height for the hunchback of Notre Dame though, LOL

P1050209

Chimera feeding and do you see Allan peeking from behind?

P1050212_2

On to more, narrow, steep steps

P1050214

No regrets about taking the many many steps – the view is fantastic!

The whole of Paris at our feet.

P1050220

P1050230

See the clever engineering of using the Gargoyles?

P1050232

P1050235

Paris is a nice cuddly city – best thing to do when its cold or windy!

P1050238

This gallery allowed us to walk all around and view Paris from the North, South, East and West!

P1050249

Time to go

P1050251

Lots of odd shaped windows and doors as we go up and down the towers – perfect for photography

P1050254

The hunchback of Ampang 🙂

P1050256

Lots of stories about the facade of the Notre Dame – go read all about the Kings of Judea, the stories of the Bible and so on, all carved out here

P1050262

Notre Dame from the back

P1050268

Ah, a well earned cup of tea (ah well, it was chocolate for me)

By the way, there are 3 price structures for the cafes in Paris – cheapest if you take away and stand around drinking or eating; a bit more if you opt to sit inside and of course we didn’t know that it costs the most to sit outside like we did. :p

P1050271

Ya well, we only had a cuppa ONCE in Paris, something I told Allan we just HAD to do – so its ok to pay for the pleasure

P1050277

we had free music drifting to us – some buskers were doing their gig away from the cafe, but the music drifted to us 🙂

Real romantic moment

P1050281

Saw an apple tree

P1050285

Picture stalls – I thought the closed stalls were some garbage bins at first!

P1050292

Bye, Notre Dame
